Why Does It Matter?

In addition to its historical significance, understanding the Byzantine Iconoclasm and the concept of iconoclasm as a whole is critical to understanding the current world around us. As previously mentioned, the Byzantine Iconoclasm was not the first instance of this type of conflict, nor would it be the last. Iconoclasm exists in our contemporary world in often unexpected places as debates concerning the existence of Confederate monuments continues and as hostile forces use the perversion of religion as a means to spread voilence and gain power. Iconoclasm as a social phenomenon is not inherently good or bad. It is, however, crucial that we are aware of similar historical conflicts for only in knowing the past can we ever hope for a better future.
